SHAYKA SHAHID JOYEE (CEB150702)

Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya

21 May, 2016, Saturday.

As I couldn't attend the closing program of SBJK with my group, group 2 because of my illness, I had to join group 4 with their project to complete my hours. Group 4's project is to teach the children of the hospital staffs in Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya (PPUM). I joined them and helped them in their activity as well as I completed my remaining hours.

After going to the hospital, Miss Sapiah who is the in charge of our teaching session briefed me everything regarding how to teach the children, how to prepare notes for them, how to give them tasks and how to complete the task as well. Miss Sapiah was very kind and gentle with me. So, as the first time experience as a teacher, I felt very overwhelmed. Miss Sapiah understood my situation and guided me according to her way. When she was guiding me, I learnt a lot of things that a teacher should handle. A teacher must be punctual, should make the students understand the topic, should take care of the students and so on. I followed her instructions and managed to teach and handle the students which was a big achievement for me.

With Miss Sepiah and the keader of group 4
I was assigned to teach Science to Form 1-3. As I have knowledge about science, I took this subject for teaching the students. I had 3 students to teach the subject. Though the students were very less, but it was not easy to teach them and make them understand the topic. So, I tried my level best to teach them the given topic and make them understand. The students were quite cooperative because I was teaching in English. I thought they would feel uncomfortable but I was wrong. They understood every single thing that I was trying to deliver to them and helped me to complete the teaching procedure. Even the students taught be Bahasa Malaya after finishing the class. It was fun learning a new language with my students.

The other members were also teaching other subjects like Maths, Science to other students. I was observing their teaching styles. How they teach, how they handle the students and so on. I was applying their method of teaching sometimes for a change and the students enjoyed that very much. As some of the members had experiences of teaching before, I observed them and learnt some new techniques to teach the children and those techniques helped me to teach them as I wanted.

teaching students of form 4-6
When I was teaching the students, I kept in mind that I should give my very best to make them understand the topic. The students were also very cooperative. I made them understand the whole topic and they were very satisfied with that. I also gave them a task to do and they successfully did the task. I was feeling relieved as I made sure that the students are comfortable with English and they understood the whole topic that I teach them today.

While I was teaching the students, I realized that a teacher has to work hard for their students. A student's job is to understand the topic and learn it. But a teacher has lot more to do. He has to make the topic understand to all of his students. if any student is weak, he has to take special care. For that, he might take extra classes for that particular student. Also, if a teacher teaches something to the students, he should have full knowledge about that topic. Then only he is able to teach. A teacher has to be punctual and caring towards his students as well.  he should be well-mannered and should be fluent in English as well. After teaching the students, I realized the work load of a teacher and achieved my goal to teach the children. maybe I have not gained all the qualities a teacher has, but at least I came to know about all the things that a teacher has to tackle with. It was very exciting for me as well as I felt accomplished.

The day came to an end. I thanked the students and Miss Sapiah as well as the members of group 4 to help me complete my remaining hours as well as for helping me to gain such experience. I also thanked Dr. Anna, the supervisor of group 4 for guiding me and helping by taking me into their group for completing my hours.

ONG YING YING CEB150125

During the last day of my visit to SBJK, I had a great experience with the children and my groupmates. In the morning, In the morning, I had a great time doing aerobics with the children and my groupmates. The song being used during the aerobic was ‘Merdeka’ which was the theme song for our previous Minggu Haluansiswa. I can tell that the children are enjoying themselves just as much as us when they try to follow our actions during the aerobic session.

After that we had a session for the children to express themselves through drawing on a piece of paper. The children were very creative and some of them come up with very beautiful drawings. After they have completed the drawings, the drawings are hanged to appreciate them of their efforts and to decorate the place.

Later that day, we also had a speech from our teacher advisor and our group leader Zafran for the closing ceremony. Everyone cooperate and carry out the tasks assigned to them such as the emcee is in charged of making the programmes flow according to plan meanwhile making the ceremony more happening. The closing ceremony make me look back at all our visits to SBJK and how much I have gained from doing this project. I sincerely hope that the children enjoy themselves throughout the 3 days programmes just as much as me and groupmates enjoy ourselves. I was touched once I knew that the boy who sang that day was an OKU and that this was the first time he sing with confidence in front of everyone.

Furthermore, after the closing ceremony we also have a birthday celebration session whereby we celebrated those children birthday who is born in May. We also bought 2 cakes for all the children. We also had performance from some of our groupmates which makes the party more lively. I hope that the birthday celebration was memorable to them and that they would appreciate our efforts.

Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih

6th May 2016

         The Planning Phase:

It was the last day to visit Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih (SBJK) and I felt very excited to go to this school again. The flow of the program for the whole day are fixed so I just followed it. Me and my group have prepared a closing ceremony and have prepared all things that are needed for the ceremony. I reached the school around 8.15 am and by the time 9 am the aerobic session occurred.

       The Current Phase:

I was one of the facilitator for the student at that time and ''Merdeka'' song by Faizul Sani was used to do aerobic session. It was the song used in Minggu Haluan Siswa for me and my group as the new students of University of Malaya. The students were taught to follow our movement during the session and we had lots of fun while doing it. Everyone did really well.

After that, the students were given a piece of paper according their favorite color and required to draw anything they wanted. They were very excited to draw and color the drawing. After they finished it, the drawings were collected and hanged for display. All of the drawings were beautiful and they were so happy to see their drawings. I was amazed because many of them were very good at drawing and coloring.

Next, the closing ceremony started and began with speech from the teacher and ended from our lecturers. The moment I could not forget was when it was the time for me and my other group members to perform the cheers to all of the students. It was UM cheers that represent by us. I was proud because I was part of this journey and carried UM's name. I wish some of the students will get the chance to further study in University of Malaya one day. Besides, the students also have their own cheers and it was happening. I loved the moment they did it because I was not expecting it.

Before the ceremony ended, there were performances by the students and from our group. They were very good at singing and playing instruments. They also have their own band. I hope they will achieve success in music industry if given a chance. Then, me and my group also had birthday party with the students. Me and my group decided to use our money to buy two birthday cakes for the students as well as we all celebrated those students who were born in May. Me and my group sung birthday song and ate together with the students. I was very happy to see the smiles on their faces. It felt great to share with them because it is not that something I can do for them everyday.

                 The After Phase:

The day is over eventually. It ended at 4 pm and I went home after that. There are lot of things that I learn through this journey in SBJK. This is one of the most precious experiences I ever had. It really opens my eyes and changed my perspective. It was unforgettable memories that I could not get anywhere. I started to remember some faces of students and missing them already. I hope I can still visit SBJK in the future. Thank you for the memories.

YAP CHEE KEAT (CEB150170)

It was the last day to visit the school. There are much more preparation compared to the other two days previously because I and my group member have to souvenir as an appreciation to the school and also the students by provided us this opportunity. As a leader, I learnt the responsibility of giving clear instruction and assign the right task to every group member base on their own capability and interest in order for them to more understand as well as adapt themselves in their own task. According the tentative, the day was starting with aerobic dance session, the song that my group member chosen was “Merdeka”, it was the theme song of our Minggu Haluan Siswa University of Malaya year 2015/2016. It brought back a lot of memory to me and I personally think the idea of using this song is good because it can deliver the message of independence to the students of Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih by singing and dancing together. All of us was very enjoy and dance around with the music.

After the aerobic dance session, another session which is fun decoration for coming session was carried on. The students was assigned to draw about their dream in a small paper and hang it around the canteen. When I went through their drawing, I realized most them drew a home instead of other things and everything they hope for is just a simple love from their family and the society.

Next, I have also assigned to be the conductor of the closing ceremony session. I planned the tentative and flow of the program of closing ceremony as well as arrange the time for each program such as speech, video presentation and more. I have also learnt to assign the job of usher, emcee and technician to ensure the flow of closing ceremony will be able to run smoothly. One of the most memorable highlight during the closing ceremony was that I and my group members have to perform the cheers that represent the UM students in front of all the students of Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih, at the same time they also perform the cheers that represent them to us. I personally feel it was very spiritual and cheerful to have the cheers performance.

Finally, it comes to the closing party before the day ended. The students was performing to us with their own music instrument, at the same time me and my group member also got the chance to perform to them as well and even perform together with them. I and my group member also decided to get cakes for the students whom have their birthday on that month and singing them the birthday song together. It was a very unforgettable about what I have done with this school in part of my university life, I have gained more than what I expected initially.

YAP CHEE KEAT (CEB150170)

It was a second day I got to visit Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih again. Even though it was a day during semester break which mean I have to sacrifice my holiday, but it was worth and a best remark of my memory. The main planning of that day is basically focused on the teamwork among students of Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih and provide them a balance study lifestyle, yet not forgotten to bringing joy to all of them. Thus, I and my group member were planned to have explore race on that day in Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih.

Before that day, during the discussion of the planning of that day, I suggested the idea of explore race and combine with every group members ideas of the games to play that match to our objective. Instead of giving more and more suggestion or ideas to them, I have choose to listen to everyone ideas no matter it is suitable or not and let them figure out as well as improve the ideas themselves, yet giving assistances and advise when they are in need. Everyone have assigned their own task during the explore race and conduct the games themselves as well as prepared the materials they need for the particular games themselves. I have learnt that as a leader, I need to be confidence on my group member and trust them in their capabilities, because a leader will not only giving instruction but leading and growing the team members itself together.

The explore race was very successful because the objective was achieve. The students got to learn how to work in a team and communicate with each other to achieve a mission in every station games. I even remember there was a team who have their own cheers slogan to motivate and make themselves more energetic and confidence. Nevertheless, each of the game station also provide different learning perspective such as educational, sporting and so on, to ensure students to learn while having fun. For example, mathematic games, structure building games, throwing balls and more which I think it was beneficial for all students. I think these are the reason that made this explore race success.

Besides that, every students are award with some small gift no matter they are win or lose at the end of the activity in order to motivate them and remind them not to give up which I personally think it was the best way to encourage them.

YAP CHEE KEAT (CEB150170)

Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih is a school where provide the education opportunity to the left out children on the street around Kuala Lumpur. Some of the children are homeless, poor or orphan, they do not have birth certificate and some of them came from a very tough family background or maybe do not even have a family. It was my first time present myself and know about this school. It was a small but systematic school who not only provide education, yet provide them to learn some skills like music instrument and so on in order for them to survive in the society. Besides that, the facilities such as canteen, classroom, music room and so on are good in order to provide a comfortable and good environment for the students to study. Most of the teachers there are very kind because they rather give up the chance to teaching in a normal school, instead they come to this school to teach and help this kind of children.

We did the fund raising for the to students before we come to the school. We manage to sell about 120 of cupcakes in campus.

The day begin with the briefing by the school principal with the video of establishment and also profile of Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih. I personally feel touched especially when they show the part of the students cried because they would not be able to have a family or love like us from our family members.

After the briefing, I and my group member start the programme with pre-school students as planned earlier. It was my first experience to lead everyone in the group to plan such amazing tentative together and we get the chance to apply it in the school. They are very excited to see us, yet they are more obedient than what I expected. During the activities, there are some unexpected problem happen which totally out of what I expected and the planning. For example, one of the kid was crying and not willing to join the activities, some activities were delay or not on time and more. Yet, trough out these unexpected changes, I got to learnt how to adapt to the change of environment and stay calm to find out another best solution when problems occur.

Besides that, I have learnt how to communicate with the group members and helping each other during the activities and this is very important especially working in a team.
