AISYAH SOLEHAH BINTI MD YUSOF (CEB150002)

20th March 2016 (Dapur Jalanan)

Dapur Jalanan @ Bangsar Club

This is the first time I went to Dapur Jalanan KL and joined program like this. Thanks to the Social Engagement subject, I could experience such a great opportunity to do a welfare.

First of all, there are a lot of positive outcomes I gained from this project. For example, I managed to stay cooperate and communicate with the group members in order to prepare the food for the homeless on time. Maybe there are not a lot of things to do on that day because a restaurant sponsored them Nasi Ayam Ramesh but still, for the first timer, communication and cooperation are the main keys to done the work.

History of Dapur Jalanan and information on Bangsar Club
From 2 pm until 7 pm, from food preparation to sharing session, there was no time to rest except for prayers and time before food sharing session. During the rest, the member of Dapur Jalanan, Mr. Shafiq, he shared with my group about the history of establishment which is Dapur Jalanan was founded in 2013.

I can conclude that I could see the happiness in the homeless face when they received the help. They thanked every each of us and talk with us politely. Not all of them are homeless. Even some of them have a job but they cannot cope with the living cost in Kuala Lumpur.
While doing the food sharing session, infused one feeling in my heart which is appreciation. I realised I should be appreciated what in front of me and my surrounding.
Cleaning and Packing
25th March 2016 (Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih - 1st Visit)

Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih (SBJK) has been operated since 19 August 2013. The school is located 5 minutes walking from Chow Kit Monorail Station. The school is specialised for the kids from 4 until 19 years old which they put certain rules and regulations as not normal teenagers or kids can enter this school. I heard about the school when I was 17 because I joined a Bulan Sabit Merah Malaysia (BSMM) Camp at Putrajaya. During that time, the school not known to outsiders.

To be there and organised activities for the kids especially kindergarten students were not easy. My group discussed several times and have to do a full mock rehearsal to make sure everything will run smoothly. We have done fundraising by selling cupcakes in order to buy gifts and snacks for the students.

I, as a Game Conductor, had to do a lot of talking. I had to keep the students interested to join us and allured them with snacks. Every time they lost their focus, I will persuade them and said, “Anyone who win the game will get a candy!”.
Meeting the students
Teacher's briefing

Being a Game Conductor, I realised that being a teacher is not easy. I have to keep up with the students. I need to make sure the games were not boring and they stay active.
One of the kinder student, named Aisyah, suddenly she cried in front of me. I panicked but luckily their teacher was there and she took Aisyah away to cool her down.

Overall, I could see that the students were ecstatic when my group came and did some activities with them. With such activities, they could relieve their stress from learning all the week long.

8th April 2016 (Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih - 2nd Visit)

My group second visit to the school. Again, my group had briefing session with the Headmaster because representative from RTM ‘Jurnal Bes’ came and did some media coverage on our activities. But this time, my group focus was primary school students.

The night before the visit, my friends and I went to 8th Residential College to wrap hampers for the explorace groups.

For the primary school, we organised an explorace. My subunit group was in-charged in Fill Water in the Bottle. Before the explorace started, while waiting for the students done their aerobic session, my subunit team prepared for the place as ome exchange had to be done as there was raining.

What I observed, the students were eager to play the game. Some of them brainstormed the strategy how to fill the bottle within 2 minutes but some of them can’t even fill the bottle. So, what the others did are they hold the bottle and guided the end of the sponge to the mouth of the bottle.

What I gained from this activity, I learnt how to encourage them to do well while doing the task. I learnt how to communicate well with them. I had to low my standard of communication and the same time stay strict so that they could understand what I said and listen to the instructions.

The session for that day had to end early because of the school had visits from Ministry of Education. I asked one of the student, her perspective of the activities, she said to me that she happy because we came again and she even remembered my friend because on 20th March, they had session together. That student said she can’t wait to come to University of Malaya (UM) and she felt excited. She told me not to forget about 6th May which the 3rd session with the school students at UM.
