Tan Xin Yi CEB150156 - Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih (SBJK) - Primary 1,2,3 15 April 2016 (Friday)

Well, this is our 2nd visit to SBJK! I was really excited to be back to here again!
During our 2nd visit, we planned something different for the primary level students. The students were divided into different groups. I was put in charge for the entire aerobic exercise session as well as being the facilitator for one of the groups. During the aerobic session, their eagerness in carrying out the activities gave me the encouragement to guide them and at the same time, I really felt energetic and enjoyed it as much as those kids did. We continued on with a mini-race competition where every team have to go through all the stations to complete every game task first in order to be crowned champions. This activity allowed the children to be actively moving about and while learning the importance of cooperation and helping out one another. My team under my supervision and facilitation ended up coming in as 2nd runner up!
At the end of the day, seeing those kids having a smile over their exhausted faces made me feel that although there wasn't much that we can contribute, we still did a noble thing by making their day a really enjoyable one. Last but not least, my team and I have thought of contributing one last thing to this special school, which is to assist in spreading awareness so that the public can volunteer and help out those children which need extra care and most importantly, someone to give them a memorable childhood.

Through this event, I learned the importance of working as a team to make an event work. I was incharged of one of the station for the Explorace and I learned how to cooperate with my team members in giving the instructions and oversee the process of the games so that the station runs smoothly. I realised that each and everyone has their own roles and responsilbility in to making this event enjoyable and fun for the students.
I was able to experience how my team members and the facilitators cooperate to conduct the games so that the children are able to learn values like team spirit while having fun. I was thankful the event turns out smoothly.

I also learned to be more flexible when something doesn’t go according to plan, and learn to adapt and be prepared for whatever that comes in my way. For example, the times when the children become too hyperactive and noisy that they are difficult to control.  There are times when the students become upset and fight with one another for little reasons.

Tan Xin Yi CEB150156 - Fundrasing 22 March 2016 (Tuesday)

Who on Earth does not like muffins?
With its fluffy and warm inside as well as the fruity flavors all over, a muffin a day can definitely make your day! And by carrying yet another fundraising event, we managed to please Universiti Malaya's sweet tooth by selling out muffins! With the help of one of our group member's (Ee Yiin) mother for baking the muffins, we sold them for a reasonable price of RM2 and offered 3 muffins for only the price of RM5! It was good business and it helped us to continue enforcing the marketing skills we've learnt in class based on real-life situations. In a nutshell, it was quite an experience for me!

Tan Xin Yi CEB150156 - Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih (SBJK) - Preschool Group 25 March 2016 (Friday)

Right smack in the busy city centre of Kuala Lumpur at Chow Kit, there exist a special school which most people cease to notice. This special school caters mostly to youths who do not have the privilege to study in regular schools, by providing them with not only education but also skills training which they are lacking of while growing up. However, due to the absence of acknowledgement from the public, the school critically requires more helping hands to give these youths a childhood they truly deserve.

Throughout my experience volunteering at this special school, the beginning I would say it was slightly challenging for me to fit in as I am not a person who can tolerate young kids maybe due to the fact that probably because I am the youngest in my family.

On the first day, we were first welcomed by the staff upon arrival and shortly later, given a briefing by the school principal. I was put in charge as a coordinator to manage the entire programme. After that it was time to meet the children. Honestly, I wasn’t really comfortable about the idea to deal with young kids but as time goes by, this project totally changed my mind and perspective regarding them.

As I was tasked to help capture pictures throughout the programme for my team and after snapping pictures of activities as well as bonding between us volunteers with those children, looking back at the photo shots I took gave me a sense of satisfaction regarding the design of the whole programme and seeing how much the kids enjoyed it gave me a wonderful and worthy feeling too. It also gave me a chance to view their tough life through their perspective which made me learn to value what I have in life as well as to lend a helping hand to the needy. Last but not least, I was really looking forward to visit the school again!

Tan Xin Yi CEB150156 - Dapur Jalanan, Bangsar 20 March 2016 (Sunday)

Apart from volunteering at the school, we also have another social engagement project called "Dapur Jalanan" at Kelab Bangsar Utama on the 20th of March. Its concept is based on something like "Soup Kitchen" with the sole purpose of preparing food for those homeless and needy people.
We went there to assist in the preparation and distribution of food to the homeless and personally, this opened up my sense of humanity during this project and for me, it was very inspiring because by conducting this project, we can help those needy people on the basic necessity they're lacking of - food. The food that we prepared on that day were Mayonnaise Egg Sandwiches, fruit salad and orange juice. During the process, I helped out in shelling eggs, preparing and packing sandwiches.

When we arrived at Jalan Panggung to set up our booth, I helped out in distributing out chicken rice to the homeless who are queuing up for food and whilst we were distributing, I am glad to witness humanity being restored as other volunteers including my team worked their hardest without complaining for one single intention which is to provide meals for the unfortunates as well as to be a lending ear to them as they share their background and experiences in life with me.

Besides, I am really impressed by the passion and kindness of those committe of "Dapur Jalanan" because they are willing to sacrifice their time and even take every small details from head to toe into consideration. For instance, the committee told us that they did some survey before creating the menu. They took note of what kind of food are simple and convenient but favorite of many as well and at the same time they concern about the type of food which are more suitable for those elderly to make sure everyone can get to savor their delicious meal conveniently. Although this is just a charity work but they do it wholeheartedly and for that, I truly respect them and I am inspired by their passion. Last but not least, we are really grateful to be able to receive their gratitude and appreciation towards us for carrying this project for them.

In conclusion, this "Dapur Jalanan" project is indeed a very meaningful activity that creates a positive impact to the society which we hope that more youths can contribute and create more positive impacts to the society!

22 March 2016 (Tuesday) - Fundraising
As we need to do a half-day program at SBJK, we are planning to give the prizes to the school kids as there are some games and competition sessions. In order to get the money to buy the prizes, we have a fundraising activity which is selling cupcakes in our faculty, Faculty Business and Accountancy. Actually our group is not really setting up a store, but we allocate the cupcakes equally to each of the group member and sell to their own friends or course mates or even their lecturers. We managed to sell those cupcakes out through our efficient distributing strategy. We started to buy those prizes for the school kids after we got the profits from the fundraising activity. Some of us have met each other on one day to wrap the prizes together. Cooperation is one of the key character from our group which enables us to finish all the tasks on time. Helping each other without any complaining is the key to success in a group project. I appreciated it, and I believe that together hand in hand, we can make this program done perfectly. With you all, I think this is going to be a part of my great memory in my university life.

Meeting for Social Engagement

4 March 2016 (Friday) - Discussion about the activity details for SBJK

We have discussed about the games for activities in SBJK after brainstorming session. Other than this, we also have discussed about the design of our group T-shirt and fundraising activity details. We actually have another meeting on the other day to finalized everything before we are going to carry out our program. I learnt that how to work as a team to practice out a half-day program and we really take a lot of consideration while we designed the games and other session for the school kids. For example, we need to make our program flow so that we able to handle the situation if the time is not follow on the schedule. Even though not everybody can attend the meeting for every time, but we still able to assign the tasks to everyone to make sure that each of us is following the project's progress. This is one of the part I like for my group. Contribution from everyone is highly appreciated by each of us. Cooperation and communication skills among each other group are getting better and better after several meeting since we are starting to know each other. I hope that our program can run fluently on that real activity day so that the efforts we have put in are not wasted. I am really looking forward for the coming activity in SBJK and I wish that each of us will have fun and unforgettable day.

15 April 2016 (Friday)  -  Second trip to Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih

This was the day I'm looking forward too! We can again meet with those cute kids. But there was a bit different for this time, where our groups were doing an explorace for the primary school kids. We have arrived at Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih (SBJK). As usual, we have listened to the school principal's briefing about the activities today.

We did the aerobic session for those students for the purpose of warming up before the explorace get started. They also have been divided into 8 groups for the station games in explorace. Right after the recess time, we straight away started the games and all the students were looked so excited to play their parts in those games.

I have seen the team building skills from the students where they were able to finish all the station games. They were just happy for the explorace activity. I can see that they were really enjoyed in this. And I felt so contented when I saw their cheerful laughter. Actually, what a kid want is very simple, they smile when they are happy, they laugh when they have fun. I love their pure and simple minds. Having fun with them was just so amazing and fantastic. I could say that is they brought the joys to me and made my day totally delighted.

We used to complaint everything, such as when the Wi-fi system down, when there is a power cut, or even when the food does not meet the appetite. Nowadays, the city young adults like us is more and more forget how to be grateful and appreciate for everything that we are having now. But from the students from SBJK, I have realized that what I can do is to cherish everything that I have when the life does not go on as what I wish. Learn to be thankful is the moral value that we have actually learnt during our primary school, but the people who can really practice it out are less and less as the time passed. Be thankful for the difficult times, because it give me opportunity to learn; be thankful for each new challenge, because it will built my strength and character; be thankful for my mistakes, because they will teach me valuable lessons.

Through this project, I was able to learn more about how important is teamwork. Before this I do not have much thought about this programme, but after many discussions and meeting I feel committed to plan and implement the activities for the children. This is because I realized I am working hard towards making this programme enjoyable for the children in SBJK.

Throughout the whole event, I learned how important it is to plan before and during the day of the event so that the event runs smoothly. I realised the importance of actively cooperating with one another especially during the day of the event so that the programmes are carried out as planned and the whole situation is under control
.
I realised it is very important for me to carry out my tasks that was assigned so that the event will turn out successful because I am also part of the team. For example, while I interacting with the children from ‘Asas 2. Moreover, I realised that when I serve as a University Malaya student to this community, I am representing University Malaya so it is important to be courteous and professional throughout the event.

I personally sympathize the students in SBJK when I knew the backgrounds of these students. After watching the video that was being played during the meeting, I found out that the students there are either orphans, students that are not able to go to the regular daily school (Sekolah menengah harian) due to extreme poverty and those who do not have personal identification. I feel pity for the students for having such a hard life and I realised how blessed I am for how I came into this world and the family I have.

Initially, I was worried if it would be tough to interact with them after considering the effect of their background on them. I thought that these students will be very quiet and gloomy due to what they have been through. However, my perception shifted after interacting with them. The children are very happy, hyperactive and playful just like other kids. They are very polite and showed me good manners. These children taught me that I shouldn’t let challenges to overcome me and taught me to live my life positively
.
Previously, I do not have much experience in dealing with kids, so I was feeling insecure about how to approach them and interacting with them. However, I learned to observe how others approach these students and manage to step out of my comfort zone by approaching few of the students. I also take the opportunity to join in one or two games and play with the students.

Reflection
Date:20/3/2016
Venue: Kelab Bangsar Utama; Dapurjalanan

At the beginning of the social engagement project, me and my group mates started as strangers who do not know each other but after working together for this programme we start to know each other personally as friends. Through this programme, I got the opportunity to interact with my groupmates and bond over meetings and the day of the actual event. I get to know my coursemates better and I managed to make new friends.

I also develop skills in working as a team and learn to carry out my role as a secretary for this team.  I was able to experience team spirit when I see the willingness of my groupmates to come together to attend the meetings although all of us are busy with classes and assignments. This also taught me to become more responsible as an individual when I see that everyone is making an effort to plan and organise this event.

By having discussions with my groupmates and the process of looking for NGOS, I slowly developed the skills to interact and communicate with different people. I realised the importance of being courteous and professional while interacting with representatives from the NGO because I am representing my groupmates and University Malaya in general. After dealing with some NGOS, we managed to find Dapurjalanan.

On the day of the Dapurjalanan event, I learn how to cooperate with my coursemates from Group1 and 2 during the food preparation for the homeless and poor urban citizen. I was glad that I was able to help out when I see everyone cooperate by following the instructions and actively working on the tasks assigned to them during the food preparation and setting up of the distribution station. I was in charged of peeling the eggshells and I was at the hygience section at the distribution station. I noticed that when everyone is committed jobs gets done easier and faster.

I learned that I shouldn’t judge people based on how they wear and look. Although these people are not very neatly dressed but they are very polite. I understand that some people are just less fortunate and that some of end up in the streets due to making bad decisions in life. I felt really bad for these people when I see that some of them came with wearing dirty clothes and unruly hair.

Moreover, I wonder where do these people live and if they still have family members and whether if they are being feed sufficiently.I can’t help but to sympathize with the lives that they are going thorugh. At the end of the day, I was happy that I was able to help these people by providing them with what they need; food even if it is only for a day.

NURUL DIANA BINTI JUSOH CEB150115 A DAY AT JALAN PANGGONG WITH DAPUR JALANAN

I heard a lot about Dapur Jalanan from my members because they when there for their Titas and Ethnic Relations assigments. I'm very excited to go there because for the first time in my life I can involved to help the urban poor  and try to approach them to know how their real life. Actually not all of them are homeless and jobless but they work only to have the food for that day.

I and  the team members from group 1 and 2 go  there by lrt and arrive at Kelab Bangsar Utama at Bangsar around 2pm after walking for a few minutes from Lrt Bangsar. On that day we need to prepare egg sandwiches, and cutting the fruits like apples, pears, guavas and watermelon for fruits salad. I'm assigned to prepare the fruits by cutting it to the small pieces for prepared fruits salad. Although on that day i'm not felling well, but i'm try to do my best for the group. Actually on that day, that have a restaurant Nasi Ayam Ramesh sponsed the foods to the urban poor so we did not assigned  to do the heavy task like cooking. When prepared the foods I learn how to communicate and cooperate with each other because most of them are new friends for me. So at that time, I had know more about them.

Then, on 5 pm I and all the team members go to Jalan Panggong to serve the foods to the urban poor. When looking at them, I'm became  little bit sensitive and  I think a lot about my life. I'm felt sorry for them. When we arrived there, they are already waiting for us to get the foods.

I assigned to take part for the hygiened part.I  and my team members had given 3 plastic trash to separate food waste  to food waste, all of the materials that can be recycled and which can not be recycled. The food waste will be parsed to use as fertilizing to the plants and the process will be doing at UM. I'm proud as UM students because UM  became the center to compos the food waste. The distribution of food to the urban poor finish around 6.30 pm .

What I learn from that day is how grateful I am even I did not come from a wealthy family but still have home to life and have foods to eat everyday.  Apprieced and grateful with what we have.I hope this project will continue because not everyone is willing to do this noble work without expecting anything in return . Hopefully I will come here again for the next session.

25 March 2016 (Friday) - Trip to Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih

Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih (SBJK) is a special school where under convention of the rights of the child. SBJK is one of the initiatives by Malaysia Education Ministry as the access for the street children around Kuala Lumpur that are abandoned in this country to get better education. The objectives of SBJK are provide homeless and abandoned street children access to basic education, the platforms for work opportunities, the skills and knowledge to be independent and also ensure no child is left behind. It is a new exploration for me to go to SBJK, a totally different school which it is  the only one school in Malaysia where the students no need to wear school uniform.

Before we go to the school, we did have several meetings to discuss the program flow on that day. We have brainstorming session to think of the different types of activities. After few weeks discussion, we have finalized our activity list, which we will having game session, moral sharing session and also drawing session. I really have a fun day with all those cute kids even they are just in a very less number. Together we laughed and enjoyed the half-day program which we specially prepared for them. Our program was ended at around 4 pm on that day. I am looking forward for my next meeting with them!

Today I have learnt a lot from the pre-school kids. Even though they are from special families and different backgrounds from the normal kids, they never complaint for their life and status. Because of the economic fragility of the family, these children may eventually end up permanently on the streets. Happiness consist in contentment. This is what I have found from them. For every child, I don't know their backgrounds and stories, but what I can do is to deliver my love and care to them so that they will know they are not left behind the world. Seeing their warmth smiles on their faces is the happiest matter in life. There is a bless for them to meet a school like SBJK who willing to help and care about them. And I really hope there will be a better bright life is waiting for them in their coming future.

AISYAH SOLEHAH BINTI MD YUSOF (CEB150002)

20th March 2016 (Dapur Jalanan)

Dapur Jalanan @ Bangsar Club

This is the first time I went to Dapur Jalanan KL and joined program like this. Thanks to the Social Engagement subject, I could experience such a great opportunity to do a welfare.

First of all, there are a lot of positive outcomes I gained from this project. For example, I managed to stay cooperate and communicate with the group members in order to prepare the food for the homeless on time. Maybe there are not a lot of things to do on that day because a restaurant sponsored them Nasi Ayam Ramesh but still, for the first timer, communication and cooperation are the main keys to done the work.

History of Dapur Jalanan and information on Bangsar Club
From 2 pm until 7 pm, from food preparation to sharing session, there was no time to rest except for prayers and time before food sharing session. During the rest, the member of Dapur Jalanan, Mr. Shafiq, he shared with my group about the history of establishment which is Dapur Jalanan was founded in 2013.

Food Sharing s
I can conclude that I could see the happiness in the homeless face when they received the help. They thanked every each of us and talk with us politely. Not all of them are homeless. Even some of them have a job but they cannot cope with the living cost in Kuala Lumpur.
While doing the food sharing session, infused one feeling in my heart which is appreciation. I realised I should be appreciated what in front of me and my surrounding.
Cleaning and Packing
25th March 2016 (Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih - 1st Visit)

Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih (SBJK) has been operated since 19 August 2013. The school is located 5 minutes walking from Chow Kit Monorail Station. The school is specialised for the kids from 4 until 19 years old which they put certain rules and regulations as not normal teenagers or kids can enter this school. I heard about the school when I was 17 because I joined a Bulan Sabit Merah Malaysia (BSMM) Camp at Putrajaya. During that time, the school not known to outsiders.

To be there and organised activities for the kids especially kindergarten students were not easy. My group discussed several times and have to do a full mock rehearsal to make sure everything will run smoothly. We have done fundraising by selling cupcakes in order to buy gifts and snacks for the students.

I, as a Game Conductor, had to do a lot of talking. I had to keep the students interested to join us and allured them with snacks. Every time they lost their focus, I will persuade them and said, “Anyone who win the game will get a candy!”.
Meeting the students
Teacher's briefing

Being a Game Conductor, I realised that being a teacher is not easy. I have to keep up with the students. I need to make sure the games were not boring and they stay active.
One of the kinder student, named Aisyah, suddenly she cried in front of me. I panicked but luckily their teacher was there and she took Aisyah away to cool her down.

Overall, I could see that the students were ecstatic when my group came and did some activities with them. With such activities, they could relieve their stress from learning all the week long.

8th April 2016 (Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih - 2nd Visit)

My group second visit to the school. Again, my group had briefing session with the Headmaster because representative from RTM ‘Jurnal Bes’ came and did some media coverage on our activities. But this time, my group focus was primary school students.

The night before the visit, my friends and I went to 8th Residential College to wrap hampers for the explorace groups.

For the primary school, we organised an explorace. My subunit group was in-charged in Fill Water in the Bottle. Before the explorace started, while waiting for the students done their aerobic session, my subunit team prepared for the place as ome exchange had to be done as there was raining.

What I observed, the students were eager to play the game. Some of them brainstormed the strategy how to fill the bottle within 2 minutes but some of them can’t even fill the bottle. So, what the others did are they hold the bottle and guided the end of the sponge to the mouth of the bottle.

What I gained from this activity, I learnt how to encourage them to do well while doing the task. I learnt how to communicate well with them. I had to low my standard of communication and the same time stay strict so that they could understand what I said and listen to the instructions.

The session for that day had to end early because of the school had visits from Ministry of Education. I asked one of the student, her perspective of the activities, she said to me that she happy because we came again and she even remembered my friend because on 20th March, they had session together. That student said she can’t wait to come to University of Malaya (UM) and she felt excited. She told me not to forget about 6th May which the 3rd session with the school students at UM.
